スティーブ・マックィーンの愛したチャッカブーツ（通称マッドガードブーツ）
再スタートしたHutton of Northamptonというブランドから、まさにその本物のブーツが届き、Gozovationでの販売が始まりました。

共同創設者のギャリー・コーベン氏よりメッセージをいただいております。

『2015年にスタートした私たちの目標は、クラシックなデザートブーツを限定生産することでした。

最高の素材を使い、費用を惜しむことなくイタリアでハンドメイドしています。レザーのフットベッド、アンバーや他の染色クレープの約2倍のコストがかかるブロンドクレープを使用しています。
私たちは、1970年代に英国で作られたデザートブーツのようなものを作りたかったのです。
それは、1958年から1973年までスティーブ・マックイーンが履いていた、伝説のチャッカブーツ「Hutton Playtime」を復活させることです。

マックイーンが履いていたブーツを正確に言うと、ネット上に多くの物語がありますが、これらの物語のほぼすべてが間違っています。単なるインターネットの神話だ。

なぜ、スティーブがハットンだけを履いていたとわかるのか？
1934年（生産開始は1936年）から1970年代初頭まで、ハットンはプレイタイムモデルの構造に関する特許を所有していたからです。
この特許は米国で強く擁護され、結局、イギリスの小さなメーカーは、強大なインターナショナル・シュー・コーポレーションと特許の侵害を争って廃業に追い込まれたのです。
また、1930年代以降の広告や社説には、常にハットン・オブ・ノーサンプトン社が登場し、1950年代半ば以降、同ブランドは米国で大きな存在感を示していたことも、この事実を物語っている。

したがって、スティーブ・マックイーンが「サンダース」や「ブリティッシュ・ウォーカー」を履いていたという話は、単純に事実無根であることが分かるのだ。
1973年にプレイボーイの名前はスカンジナビアの会社に売却され、彼らはオリジナルのハットンと比較して、プロポーションと厄介なデザインのうち、フランケンシュタインブーツの種類にモデルを回した。彼の映画をフリーズフレームしたり、当時の写真をよく研究しているマックイーンのファンなら、マックイーンが『適切な見知らぬ人との恋』でより重いモデルの靴を履いていたかもしれないが、彼が『ブリット』で履いたクラシックブーツはオリジナルの細身の靴底のプレイタイムだということがわかるだろう。

『ブリット』のマックイーンのブーツは黒い靴底だったという、消え去ることを拒むもうひとつのインターネット上の神話がある。これは事実ではない。
マックイーンは、どの映画でも自分のハットン・ブーツを履いていた。『ブリット』のブーツはよく使われている。サンフランシスコ空港の滑走路を走る有名なシーンでは、ブーツのソールを人工的に暗くして、そのシーンで邪魔にならないようにした可能性が高い–暗闇の中でブロンドのクレープが光っていたら、誰も見たくはなかっただろう。また、ブロンド縮緬は、着用すると非常に濃いグレーになるのが現実です。私たちはこの例をInstagramアカウントに掲載しましたが、ネット上の陰謀論者たちはいまだにマックイーンが黒い靴底を履いていたと信じています。ハットンは黒いクレープソールの靴を作ったことはなく、非常に濃いフォクシング（サイドクレープ）はあるかもしれませんが、ソールとヒールのベースは決してありませんでした。

オリジナルモデルは重く、フォクシングと呼ばれる縮緬の側面が重いソールから剥離する問題に悩まされることが多かったため、モダンなアプローチで、天然のプランテーション縮緬を使ったソールユニットを再現し、強度と軽さを兼ね備えたモダンなミッドソールを使用しました。

また、裏地のないリバースカーフレザーというオリジナルの仕様にこだわりました。私たちにとって、このブーツに裏地を付けることは冒涜です。このモデルの「成り上がり者」たちは、ほとんどブーツの裏地を付けています。オリジナルのプレイタイムは裏地がなく、現在のバージョンと同じように、スリッパのように柔らかかったのです。

スティーブがプレイタイムでバスケットボールをやっている写真を見たことがあるんじゃないですか？それは、当時のスニーカーのようなものだったからです。
それは、しなやかで、柔軟で、なによりも美しい。』

My name is Gary Corben

I am cofounder of the relaunched Hutton of Northampton brand.

Our goal when we started in 2015 was to produce limited edition runs of classic desert boots. Hand made in Italy from the best materials with no expense spared. We use leather footbeds, blond crepe which costs nearly double amber and other dyed crepe.
We wanted to build desert boots that were like the ones we’d grown up with made in England back in the 1970s. But really our aim was one thing – to revive the legendary Hutton Playtime, the much loved and much disputed chukka boot as worn by Steve McQueen from around 1958 to 1973 when the original Hutton of Northampton company went bust after trying to defend its patent in the USA.

There are many stories online about exactly which boots McQueen wore – almost all of these stories are wrong. Just Internet myths.

How do we know that Steve wore Hutton only? Because from 1934 (production started in 1936) until the early 1970s Hutton owned a patent on the construction of the Playtime model. This patent was defended in the US so strongly, that eventually the small English maker went out of business after fighting the mighty International Shoe Corporation from infringing its patents. This and the fact that contemporary adverts and editorial from the 1930s onwards always referenced Hutton of Northampton Ltd and the brand had a huge presence in the USA from the mid 1950s onwards.

Therefore we know that the stories of Steve McQueen wearing ’Sanders’ or ‘British Walkers’ are simply untrue. In 1973 the name Playboy was sold to a Scandinavian company who turned the model into a kind of Frankenstein boot, out of proportion and awkward design compared to the original Hutton. Any fans of McQueen who have freeze framed his movies or studied closely photos of the time can see that while McQueen may have worn a heavier model shoe in Love With The Proper Stranger, the classic boots he wore in Bullitt are the original slimmer soled Playtime.

There’s another internet myth that refuses to go away – that the boots McQueen in Bullitt had black soles. This is not true. McQueen wore his own Hutton boots in every movie that he wore them. The boots in Bullitt are well used. During the famous scene running across the San Francisco airport runway, the soles of his boots were most likely darkened artificially to avoid being distracting in the scene – no one would have wanted to see blond crepe flashing in the dark. The reality of blond crepe is also that when worn it goes very dark grey. We’ve posted examples of this on our Instagram account, but the internet conspiracy theorists still believe McQueen wore black soles. Hutton never made shoes with black crepe soles, very dark foxing (side crepe) maybe, but never the base of the sole and heel.

Originally branded from the mid 1930s as ‘Play-Boy,’ then ‘Playboy,’ despite pre-dating Hugh Hefner by decades the name was eventually prohibited from being used outside of Scandinavia. But, luckily for us we found an original pair of Hutton chukkas many years ago on eBay. A deadstock UK size 13 – the exact same model McQueen wore in the mid 60s and the model name was Playtime.
Sadly there is no longer the ability for English shoemakers to make these models. The skills and machinery are long gone. So we turned our attention to Italy where the tradition of hand made shoes from the finest materials still exists.

We took the original Playtime deadstock pair and used modern technology to recreate the pattern and the last.
The original models were heavy and prone to suffering issues with the crepe sides (called foxing) separating from the heavy soles, so we took a modern approach to recreate a sole unit using natural plantation crepe with a modern midsole for strength and lightness.

We also chose to stick to the original specification of unlined reverse calf leather. For us lining these boots is sacrilege. Almost all the ‘pretenders’ to the model line their boots. The original Playtime were unlined and just like our current version, as soft as slippers.

You’ve probably seen photos of Steve playing basketball in his playtime? That’s because they were like the sneakers of their day. Supple, flexible and above all, beautiful.
